Most AI writing advice assumes you write in English. A large share of novelists don't, and the question they ask is a practical one: does this actually work in my language, or will I spend my time fighting the tool back out of English? It works, with a handful of habits worth knowing before you start.

TL;DR: AI can help you draft fiction in almost any language, and the main tools for continuing your prose will usually match the language you're writing in. Some features fall back to English unless you tell them not to, so the working habit is one line of instruction: write all output in your language. Sudowrite's Write button matches your language automatically in most cases, other tools may need that instruction, and writers use it to draft in German, Italian, French, Danish, and more.

Can AI actually help me write a novel in a language other than English?

Yes. The models underneath most writing tools have read a great deal of text in the major world languages, and prose continuation, rewriting, and description work in those languages. What varies from tool to tool is whether the tool itself assumes English somewhere in the pipeline.

In Sudowrite, you can write in almost any language, and the Write button will usually match your language automatically when it offers suggestions, because it reads the text before your cursor and continues in kind. Other features, such as Draft or Plugins, may sometimes fall back on English, because the instructions those features run on are written in English.

Add a line to your instructions that says "Write all output in [your language]." That line can go in a Plugin's prompt field, in the Extra Instructions field when you generate a chapter from Scenes, or even in the document itself or a highlighted passage. Sudowrite writers around the world use this to get consistent prose in their own languages. There's currently no single Language setting for an account, so this instruction is the reliable way to keep everything in your language.

What works well, and what to watch

Continuing your prose is the strongest use. Because the tool reads what you wrote and continues it, your language and register carry forward. The more of your own text precedes the cursor, the better the match. Sudowrite's Write reads up to 20,000 words before it continues.

Rewriting and describing also hold up. Selecting a passage and asking for it shorter, more descriptive, or with more inner conflict works in the language of the passage. Where an instruction is involved, add the language line to be safe.

Generating from scratch is where English creeps in. A blank-document generation or a chapter drafted from an outline has no preceding prose to match, so the tool leans on its instructions, which are English. Always add the language line here.

Keep the Story Bible in your language too. Write your Braindump, Synopsis, Characters, and Worldbuilding in the language of the book. The AI reads those cards while it drafts, and cards in your language pull the output toward your language.

Idiom and register need the most editing. Models are stronger in widely spoken languages and in standard registers, so dialect and regional idiom are where you'll do the most editing. Style Examples help here: give Muse up to 1,000 words of your own prose and it has a reference for your specific register rather than a textbook version of the language.

A working setup

  1. Write the first few hundred words yourself, in your language. This gives Write something to match.
  2. Fill the Story Bible in your language, including the Style field with a description of your voice.
  3. Put "Write all output in [language]" in the Extra Instructions field before generating a chapter from Scenes, and in any Plugin you use.
  4. When output drifts to English, don't fight it in place. Delete, add the instruction, and regenerate.
  5. Join the Multilingual channel in the Sudowrite Discord. Writers there have worked out language-specific habits that no documentation covers.

Translating versus writing

One thing AI isn't a substitute for: a literary translator. Drafting a novel in your language with AI help is a different task from writing it in English and machine-translating it. The second produces prose that reads as translated, because it is. If your book is for readers in your language, write it in your language from the first sentence.

FAQ

Which languages does Sudowrite support?

You can write in almost any language. Write matches your language automatically in most cases. For other features, add an instruction line asking for output in your language.

Is there a language setting in Sudowrite?

Not a single account-level one at the moment. The reliable method is the instruction line, placed in the Plugin prompt field, the Extra Instructions field, or the document itself.

Does Muse work in languages other than English?

Writers report consistent results in languages including German, Italian, French, and Danish using the instruction-line method. Give Muse a Style Example in your language for the best match to your own register.

Will the AI mix languages mid-scene?

It can, particularly on a generation with little preceding prose. The fix is more of your own text before the cursor and the instruction line. Regenerate rather than patching a mixed passage.
